What You Need to Know About Loan Transfers

The U.S. Department of Education (ED), in some cases, may need to transfer the customer service of loans from one servicer to another  this link will open in a new window . When a transfer occurs, loans are not being sold. ED continues to own your loans. The "transfer" to another servicer simply means that a new servicer will provide the support you need to fully repay your loans. You will be notified if and when a transfer occurs.

What to expect if your loans are transferred to a different servicer:

  • Your assigned servicer will send you a notification to inform you about the transfer.

  • Your new servicer will send you a welcome letter after they receive your loans. This notice will provide you with your new servicer’s contact information and inform you of actions you may need to take.

  • Your loan information will be transferred to your new servicer, however, your new online account may only display details from the time your new servicer began managing your loans.

  • There will be no change in the terms of your loans.

  • Your current and new loan servicer will work together to ensure all payments made during the transfer process are credited to your account.

After you receive a welcome letter from your new servicer, you will need to:

  • Follow the new servicer’s instructions for creating an online account. This gives you access to view your loan details, make payments, manage your contact information, and send secure messages.

  • Begin sending your loan payments to your new servicer.

    • Do you use a bill pay service? If you use a bill pay service to make your loan payments, be sure to provide the new servicer’s contact information and your new account number to your financial institution.

    • Are you enrolled in Auto Pay? If so, your Auto Pay enrollment information will be sent to your new servicer. No updates are needed by you unless you would like to change or end your enrollment.

You've transferred to MOHELA

Create an online account by visiting mohela.studentaid.gov - This is the easiest way to stay organized and informed about your student loans!

If your contact information (address phone, name, and/or email) changes, please let MOHELA know at your earliest opportunity.

Once you have created an online account, you can:

  • Review loan details (balance, accrued interest, etc.)

  • Update your contact information

  • Make payments

  • Enroll in and manage notifications

  • Sign up for electronic correspondence for quicker account updates

Your monthly payment will be due within 60 days of your loan transfer and repayment information will be sent to you by MOHELA. Please note that MOHELA can accept payments as of the date you’ve been notified of the transfer.

Your account may be placed in an administrative forbearance to allow time for the transfer to be completed. We will send you a billing statement at least 21 days prior to your due date.

If you were enrolled in Auto Pay with your prior servicer, your Auto Pay enrollment transferred with your loans. No action is necessary unless you wish to make changes to your existing Auto Pay agreement. We will send you an Auto Pay notice prior to your due date.
